CHAPTER 22

When Francesca Pascal woke up, she thought she’d be spending the morning having breakfast with her boyfriend, then spending the day while he was at work enjoying the beach and attempting to write some short stories. Being the wannabe author, she needed to get over the reality that she had to put actual work into getting the words on the page. For some reason, she was feeling good when she got out of bed. It was a long weekend for her, with the boss being on the mainland for the next few days. Maybe the stars had aligned. Maybe today she’d have the focus and drive to pursue her ambition.

That inspiration lasted about five minutes. When she got the text from her boyfriend, the next ten minutes were spent pacing around the house freaking out. The following half hour, she’d be crouched by the toilet, losing what little was in her stomach.

It wasn’t everyday someone received a text from her boyfriend stating: Babe, I’m alright. At nine-thirty, alert the police. Tell them that the men from that bank robbery in Miami are holding me hostage, and that they’ll be performing a drug deal near Jaquez Grave at ten-o’clock. They’ll be on board a cruiser. Four-man crew, five counting me.

Tell the cops that I was forced to house these men during the night. The cops will find their personal belongings in my basement. They fled the mainland and came to my house, because one of the men knew me in the past and thought I would help him. When it didn’t go their way, they forced their way in at gunpoint.

I AM NOT PART OF THE CREW. Make sure the cops know that. These men are armed and dangerous.

Do not text back. Do not call. They’ve got a close eye on me. I’m deleting this text as soon as I send it so they don’t find it. Also, before you call, take a snapshot of this text, attach it to an email, then send it to the cops. Then call to make sure they look at it immediately and are able to intercept these guys at the right moment.

Do not screw this up. Nine-thirty.

Sorry to get you involved in this, but I need your help.

It was nine-twenty-seven. Francesca could not comprehend what was so special about nine-thirty. Why not alert the cops right away and have them go to his house? How did he know this criminal in the past? There was too much to comprehend. Her mind was stuck at the fact that her boyfriend was being held at gunpoint and taken along to a drug deal.

Nine-twenty-eight. She thought she would pass out. Her heart wouldn’t stop beating. By now, there was nothing left in her digestive tract. Her hair was sticking to her sweaty face, her eyes were glazed over, and her skin was pasty white. She normally had gorgeous tan skin, but if one saw her for the first time today, they wouldn’t know it.
